Yarrawonga’s football coach for the last two years Steve Johnson is returning to Geelong, having been appointed the new senior coach of Newtown & Chilwell in the Geelong Football Netball League.
The triple-premiership Cat and three-time All-Australian signed a two-year deal last Sunday to take charge of the Eagles, replacing the long-serving Damien McMahon.
Johnson coached Yarrawonga Pigeons to a flag in 2023 and, as favourites for this year’s premiership, lost to Wang Rovers by three points.
His latest appointment followed discussions which started about a month ago. “It’s always a club I’ve gone and supported, even when I was playing footy at Geelong,” Johnson said.
“Whilst they haven’t had success over the past 35 years at senior level, I’m hoping that can change once I can get in there and get to work.”
