Bpangerang elder, the man popularly known and respected as Uncle Freddie Dowling, has been remembered as an inspirational leader who willingly shared his knowledge with all people.
Uncle Freddie of Jerilderie, passed away on March 8, aged 83-years-of-age.
Marmungun Rock, Apex Park Wangaratta was the venue for a Memorial Gathering in respect of the storyteller and published author last Saturday.
Marmungun means ‘of the group’ or ‘of the area’ – the closest traditional Pangerang words for community. The Marmungun Rock was conceived by another respected elder Wally Cooper.
An estimated 300 people joined family and close friends to pay their respects.
A Welcome to Country was performed by Uncles Kevin and Dozer Atkinson. Main speakers were Aunty Desiree Walker, Amy Ferguson, Kevin and Dozer Atkinson.
Many other speakers volunteered to have their say about Uncle Freddie. Wangaratta identity Ian Davidson said Uncle Freddie was a significant contributor for reconciliation, that his legacy will benefit future generations and it was a fantastic funeral.
A group of young male Damanmu Bangerang Dancers entertained the crowd. The Memorial concluded with a Smoking Ceremony.
Last year Uncle Freddie addressed Federation Council, depicting and explaining the extensive area covered by his people and land use. Children’s books he wrote are in council libraries.
