This initiative allows local residents to cultivate their own native plants, whether for personal gardens or to contribute to local farmers.
The inaugural step in this green venture is an upcoming Seed Collection Workshop, inviting community members to join in and learn the art of native plant propagation, set for Wednesday, December 13.
The workshop promises an engaging morning of plant identification and hands-on seed collection activities. Leading the workshop will be the esteemed Natasha Lappin, a Senior Land Service Officer at Murray Seed Services, a local entity under Murray Local Land Services, with a base right here in Corowa.
The workshop is tailored to provide a practical introduction to the intricacies of collecting seeds from common native plants. Participants will be guided through the basics of collection, drying, and processing various seed types. Essential topics covered include identifying the right tools, choosing optimal collection locations, and understanding when permits are necessary.
Local Landcare Coordinator with Corowa District Landcare Meredith Mitchell highlighted the significance of seed conservation in preserving and enhancing the natural heritage of the region.
“The conservation of seed is crucial as a means of protecting and enhancing our natural heritage and revegetating areas,” she said.
Morning tea and lunch will be provided. The event will run from 8:30am to 1pm at the Lowesdale Rest Area, Riverina Hwy, Coreen.
