Murray River Police District Detective Chief Inspector Jy Brown said in some cases entry was forced, but in others care was not taken to properly secure valuables.
He said it served as a warning to everyone that you must take steps to protect yourself and your property at all times.
“We live in a society where people are more desperate,” he said.
“Times have changed from those days when you could leave the car and house unlocked if you just popped to the shops, or even if you’re still at home.
“We urge everyone to look at their security measures, which includes locking your cars and homes.
“Look at CCTV and security lights.
“Don’t let these opportunistic thieves use you as an opportunity.
“If you’re going to be away from your home for an extended period, advise your neighbours, friends and family. You can also notify police, and we can help keep an eye out.
“And you should never leave valuables in sight, whether they’re in your car or at home or work.”
Incidents being investigated by police include a break-in at Deni Car-O-Tel between 9am and 11am on May 27. A cabin was entered and personal items stolen.
There was also a break-in at the north Deniliquin storage sheds.
The lessee discovered the break-in about 10am last Saturday, telling police the door lock was missing and personal items from inside the shed had been removed.
CCTV footage has been obtained.
In west Deniliquin, a series of incidents were reported in the last week.
At 9am on May 31, police received reports of a locked car being broken into overnight. The car had been ransacked, and personal items were removed from the car.
In nearby Burton St, and also reported on May 31, an unlocked car parked in a driveway was entered and a set of keys and other personal items were taken.
At another west Deniliquin address, in St Michael’s St, police were alerted to a prowler and possible thief about 3.30am on May 31.
The home’s occupant was woken by a notification to his phone from his CCTV cameras which showed a male in the yard. He was described was wearing a puffer jacket and long pants, and carrying a backpack.
Police believe sensor light deterred the man, who was last seen heading toward Decimus St.
The theft of two cars is also being investigated by police.
One was taken from a Hetherington St home in east Deniliquin, and discovered missing about 7am on May 31.
The silver Holden Cruze is still yet to be recovered.
The other was reportedly stolen from Echuca on May 15.
It was found in the rear yard of a west Deniliquin home about 10.30am on May 31.
Police have ruled out the owner of the home as a person of interest, and said the BMW has been towed for forensic testing.
Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to contact Deniliquin Police on 5881 9299 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
