The day started with Nicki Guttler blade shearing a sheep she had brought along with her.
For those watching on it was a fascinating demonstration with many comments about how quiet both the sheep and the shearing were.
Nicki’s mother, Helen Guttler, provided commentary and told of her daughter’s accomplishments in the world of competition shearing.
After she finished Nicki judged her performance by explaining how the competition judges score them. Urana gave her a perfect 100 per cent.
Nicki then spoke of her World Record where 450 merino lambs shorn in eight hours, and her involvement with sHedway, an organisation that promotes positive mental health and suicide prevention in the shearing industry.
Nicki Guttler shares with the gathering in Urana as they celebrate Women in Agriculture.
Helen, who taught Nicki to shear, then gave an entertaining rundown of her life’s involvement in farming, particularly with sheep, and how she recently took up competition wool handling, which she loves.
Fiona Marshall did not grow up on the land but is now fully involved in mixed enterprise farming.
Fiona is on a number of boards which now have about 50 per cent women.
She said when she began there were very few but that her opinion was always respected.
Fiona’s family are now growing their enterprise as their sons return home.
