Corowa Rowing had a successful regatta at Lake Moodemere with 55 crews representing the club.

The club recorded 14 wins finishing second overall in the Red Gum shield for the regattas most Successful Club and retain the MRA shield. The two days of racing will build confidence in our rowers heading into the second half of the season and the State Championships.
Day 1 of competition featured crews racing over the 800m course. The clubs first event was the B grade quad scull with Bella Heagney, Emily Tidd, Anastasia McFarlane, Adelaide Robb Cox Harvey McFarlane lining up against crew mates Eva Broad, Grietje, Susie Scott, Julie Underwood Cox Sienna McFarlane with a top finish to move into the final.
Bella’s crew rowed a great race to move into the all-important 2nd place and into the final, while Julie’s crew finished strongly in 3rd place. The final was another great battle with the Corowa crew moving out with the fast-starting Essendon combination.
The Corowa crew made a last push but we’re unable to close the gap finishing 1/2 a length back in 2nd place.
The Men’s B grade double saw the new combination of Lachie Hogan and Brodie Julian teaming up, also needing a top two finish the Corowa moved clear to take the win. In a tight battle down the course the Mercantile crew lifted their intensity to take the lead and turn the table on the heat position to take the win.
The experienced combination of Liz Sandow and Tamasin Burch teamed up in the C grade double scull. The Corowa combination settled nicely into 2nd place and progress into the final. The Corowa crew raced strongly in the final to close the gap on the early leader and finish in 2nd place.
Julie Underwood continues to impress in the single scull taking the win in the masters event. Daughter Amy rowing for Shoal Harbour kept the wins coming taking out the prestigious A grade single scull.
The club’s younger rowers were up next featuring Sommers Hogan in the Under 17 single scull. Against a strong field Sommers rowed a smart heat race to finish 2nd and progress into the final. Sommers showed her race smarts to turn the tables on the heat winner to record a great win for the club.
The improving Sienna McFarlane showed the hard work was paying off to lead all the way in the Under 15 single scull.
The mixed double sculls were rowed as First and Finals with Corowa featuring in three finals. The family crew of Tam and Alex came up against a quality field racing strongly to finish in 2nd place.
The form mixed double scull from last year of Abbyghail Richards and Bradley continued their unbeaten run to lead all the way to claim another win. The final combination of Amy and Erik Hogan had a fast race down the course to finish strongly in second place.
The Female Masters quad scull featured Julie, Susie, Grietje, Liz and Cox Sienna the Corowa crew took the early lead and held on for a great win.
The Male Master double saw Alex Schultz and Simon McFarlane racing together for the first time. The Corowa combination rowed well together ,moving clear with the early leader and in a tight battle finished in 2nd place.
Corowa had 2 crews lining up in the B Grade double scull. Anastasia and Sommers teamed up ,while Emily and Bella featured together. Both crews raced strongly in their heats to take the win and move into the 4-crew final. The 4 crews had a great battle down the course, with the early leader being challenged by the two Corowa crews.
The final sprint saw Anastasia and Sommers move into 2nd place while Bella and Emily finished 3rd.
The Hogan cousins Lachie and Erik were entered in the B grade single scull. Both scullers had great races in their heats to come away with the win and race against each other in the final. Lachie continued his fantastic form from Sydney, to take the early lead as the challenge came from the Richmond sculler and Erik. Lachie held on for a great win while Erik finished in 3rd place.
Maddison Pasqualotto and her family make the trip from Myrtleford to train and compete for the club. Needing a top 2 finish to make the final, Maddison was in a tight battle finishing strongly in 3rd place.
The club’s Under 17 female scullers lined up in the double sculls, Anastasia and Sommers teamed up against Eva and Maddison. The experienced combination of Anastasia and Sommers took the early lead to claim the win against their new club combination.
The mixed quad sculls are an exciting event, with 2 crews entered for the club. The strong combination of Bradley Pearsall, Abbyghail, Alex, Tamasin Cox Sienna continued their great form to lead all the way for the win. The new team featuring Bella ,Emily, Simon, Brodie Cox Harvey had a great battle down the course against quality opposition. With the finish fast approaching and the Corowa crew making inroads into the early leader, the final sprint saw the Corowa crew fall just short.
The male B grade quad featured Brad, Lachie, Brodie, Erik Cox Harvey with two heats the Corowa crew claimed the win and progressed into the final.
Another tough race saw the Corowa and Richmond crews move clear from the rest of the field. Nothing separated the crews as Richmond got their nose in front to claim a narrow win.
The Female C Grade quad featured Eva, Liz, Maddison, Sienna and Cox Will Hogan needing a top two finish in the heat to make the final. The Corowa crew followed the race plan to take the early lead and hold on for the win.
The final featured 4 quads , in a tight battle nothing separated the crews as the Corowa combination finished in 3rd place.
The female master double scull crews featured Julie, Susie and Grietje, Tamasin. First up was Grietje and Tamasin, rowing a well-timed race the Corowa crew raced strongly down the course to finish in 2nd place. Julie and Susie were up next, in the 4-crew final the crew finished in 2nd place.
Bradley Pearsall took on the best scullers in the A grade single scull. With Brad in quick turnarounds between the B grade quad scull and the A grade heat Brad raced a well-executed race to take the win and move into the final. Brad showed great form in the final to take the early lead and record the win.
The club’s last event for Saturday featured Adelaide and Sommers in the B grade single scull. Both scullers raced strongly in the heat to finish in 2nd place and progress into the final. Both scullers kept up with the early as the pace picked up Sommers raced strongly to finish in 2nd place while Adelaide finished 3rd.
Day 2
Day two was over the 500m sprint course. The Female B grade quad sculls led the way with both quads racing strongly and finish top two in the heat and qualify for the final. The final featured four quads with the two Corowa crews well placed at the halfway mark. The crew featuring Adelaide, Emily, Bella, Sommers and Cox Harvey finished in 2nd place while the improving quad of Eva, Susie, Grietje, Tierney Cox Sienna finished strongly in 3rd place.
The Male B grade double of Brodie and Lachie lined up needing a top 2 finish to progress into the final. Up against Saturday’s winners the Corowa crew rowed a controlled race to finish in the all-important 2nd place. The Corowa crew gave their all in the final to fall just short against their Melbourne rivals finishing in 2nd place.
The Female C grade double of Liz and Tamasin were drawn a tough heat with the 4 crews from Saturday’s final lining up,with 2 crews moving into the final. The Corowa crew raced to plan to fall just short in 3rd place to miss out on progressing to the final.
Julie Underwood continued her great start to the season to lead all the way in the master’s single scull and record a strong win.
The club changed things around in the U17 single with Saturday’s winner Sommers making way for Anastasia to test her sculling race speed. Anastasia finished second in the heat and the final to the Mercantile sculler. Sienna learnt a valuable lesson in the Under 15 single with a few missed timed strokes Sienna fell behind early and couldn’t make up the gap against the Rutherglen sculler, to finish 2nd.
The mixed double scull events were up next with Corowa represented by 3 crews. First up was the team of Brad and Abbyghail who were keen to back up Saturday’s win. The crew got out fast and took the early lead to record another win.
Alex and Tamasin were next up in the 4-crew final The Corowa came up against a strong field to finish in 4th place. Amy and Simon teamed up for their first race together and in a tight battle down the course finished in 3rd place. Corowa entered a Female A grade quad with 4 crews competing in the final. Nothing separated the 3 leading crews as Corowa and Mercantile made their move and in the sprint to the lined the Corowa crew fell 1/2 a meter short.
Saturdays Female masters’ quad winners Julie, Susie, Grietje, Liz Cox Harvey completed the double to record another win over the sprint course.
Another close race in the Male Masters double scull of Alex and Simon ,with little separating the 4 crews with 200m to go Saturday’s winners got their nose in front to take the win with Corowa in 3rd place.
A large field in the Female B Grade double scull made winning the heat was required to move into the final. Emily and Bella continue to improve with each row to finish in second place just missing out making the final. Anastasia and Sommers were up next ,racing with great maturity the girls held on for the win.
The doubles lined up in the final with little separating the crews at the halfway mark. As the pace picked up the Corowa crew moved closer to the leading double and in a final sprint to the line the Corowa crew fell just short in second place.
Lachie was looking at backing up Saturday’s win in the B grade single scull by taking the heat win and moving through to the final. The 4 scullers had a great race over the 500m course with Lachie finishing in 3rd place.
Maddison Keeps improving with every row and in the C grade single Maddison raced strongly to finish 3rd.Maddison teamed with Eva in the U17 double scull competing against crew mates Sommers and Anastasia and the local Rutherglen crew.
Saturday’s winners Sommers and Anastasia showed their experience to take the win while Maddison and Eva held of the Rutherglen crew to finish 2nd.
Corowa had two crews entered in the mixed quad sculls. First up was Bella, Brodie, Lachie, Emily and Cox Sienna leading all the way the Corowa combination claimed a great win. The crew featuring Abby, Brad, Alex, Tam and Cox Harvey was in for a tougher race as the Corowa and Essendon quads moved clear a sprint to the line saw Essendon take a narrow win.
One of the closest races over the weekend was the Male B grade quad scull Brad, Lachie, Brodie, Simon and Cox Harvey had a great race with less than a meter separating the crews over the course the Corowa crew finished in 2nd place.
The Female C grade from Saturday took on the sprint course finishing 2nd in the heat they progressed to the final. Another great race saw the Corowa crew hold their own passing two crews to finish in 2nd place.
The Female masters’ doubles of Grietje and Tamasin were up first, the Corowa crew worked hard finishing in 4th place. Julie and Susie were in for a tough race as the Corowa and Richmond crews moved clear and in a tight finish the Corowa crew held on by the closest of margins.
Brad had tight turnarounds between the B quad and A single. Racing the single heat Brad held on for a great win moving into the final featuring 4 scullers.
Over the sprint course little separated the scullers as the Mercantile Sculler pushed clear with Brad fighting right to the end finishing 3rd.The clubs last event was the Female B grade single, drawn a tough heat featuring Saturdays 4 finalists Sommers and Adelaide were in for a tough race.
As expected, the heat was a fast race with Adelaide holding on for the all-important 2nd place with Sommers closing fast in 3rd place. Adelaide had a great race in the final working hard to move into 2nd place.
The regatta was a great hit out for our rowers as we step up our training for the State Championships in March.
