Mooroopna’s Kobe Freer has delivered a match-winning haul at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve, booting five of the Cats’ seven majors to lift his Goulburn Murray junior under-16s side to a division one win over Shepparton.
On a day where the Bears peppered the goals but regularly only found a minor score, the Cats took full advantage to dunk on the maroon and gold and secure their fourth win of 2026, leaving finals on the cards.
Mooroopna raced off to a fast start after Hunter Ferrari kicked the opening major, before Shepparton tallied three behinds before quarter-time.
A pair of Cats behinds in the second term preceded Freer’s first major of the day, although it would only be five minutes later the star youngster kicked his second.
Shepparton hung around in the contest though, with goals to Harry Hanlon and Hayden Feltham bringing the margin within a kick, but Mooroopna’s Maxwell Ewart provided an 11-point buffer at the main break after a snag late in the term.
More behinds to the visitors in the third term left the Bears with further anguish despite Cody Costello and Ryder Dudgeon sinking the slipper into the Sherrin in between another pair of Freer goals.
Trailing by nine at the final change, the Bears rallied hard with momentum in the final term, but just couldn’t convert when it mattered most.
On the other hand, Freer just needed one chance to ice the game, a five-point game with two minutes left extended to an insurmountable 11-point advantage after the number 15 kicked his fifth - a late Clancy Keenan behind Shepparton’s fifth score without reward in the term making it a 7.4 (46) to 4.12 (36) result.
