KDL president Peter Cordy got busy after I had pointed out the totals of some leading goalkickers on websites had varied vastly from the league’s list.
Cordy said what appeared on the KDL’s official weekly publication, the KDL Footballer, were recognised as the official figures.
In 2012, Violet Town’s Craig Whelan booted a record 34 goals as his side scored a whopping 56.22 (358) to Ardmona’s 2.5 (17).
On the KDL website, Whelan is credited with booting 168 goals for Violet Town in that season, but the KDL Footballer had him booting 152 goals and football journeyman Perry Meka is credited with booting 151 goals in 1992 and 143 the following year for Ardmona.
But the website lists Meka kicking a total of 173 goals in 2006 and 171 the following year.
In the KDL records, Meka also topped the century in 2006 with 138 goals and in 2007 finished just two goals off the magical mark with 98, which now can be both regarded as official tallies.
Coach hops off
Murchison-Toolamba Football Club is seeking a new coach after Brett Foley told the club last week he was stepping down.
Foley has coached the combined to the last two flags in the KDL and is in his fourth season as coach of the club.
Foley, a lawn bowler of some repute, said he felt the time was right to bow out because of family commitments and the club needed a new voice at the helm.
Sand Green titles
Big month coming up for the Rochester Golf Club.
It will to host the district sand green championships in the first week of August and then the Victorian Sand Greens Championships on the final weekend (August 29 and 30).
The titles are expected to draw competitors from all over Victoria and southern NSW.
Berrigan girl makes good
The tiny NSW town of Berrigan has someone to barrack for in the Commonwealth Games, currently being held in Glasgow, Scotland.
Locally raised girl Molly Walker will be representing her country in middle distance freestyle events at the Games and won’t be lacking support from her home town.
Molly was born in Berrigan and later relocated to South Australia to pursue her elite swimming career, training out of the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) and representing the Australian Dolphins.
Marong move is on
Marong Football Club’s sustained period of success has helped sway the Bendigo Football Netball League board to accept its bid to join its league for the 2027 season.
The BFNL board has been faced with the unique and complex scenario of having two neighbouring clubs - Marong and Maiden Gully YCW - both competing in the same league, the Loddon Valley league, and both wanting to join the Bendigo League next year.
The BFNL board reached the decision that it will support Marong's entry for 2027, but not Maiden Gully YCW's.
While the BFNL board has voted in favour of Marong, the Panthers' entry for 2027 still has a hurdle to overcome after the Loddon Valley League voted to block its intended move.
The Panthers didn't receive the two-thirds support they required from LVFNL clubs to be given the green light to leave, and will now have to go through an appeal process.
Marong now being given the support of the BFNL board to make the step up into Bendigo comes at a time when the Panthers have developed into the Loddon Valley League's powerhouse club.
While the BFNL board has considered much more than just how the clubs have been performing on-field, the Panthers have been enormously successful in winning the past four Loddon Valley league senior premierships along with three reserves and two under-18 flags following the COVID-impacted years of 2020 and 2021.
The Panthers have also won seven netball premierships across the previous four seasons, including two in A reserve.
Threepeat logs 26th
The old fella has done it again.
Stanhope trained pacer Cresco Threepeat saluted for the 26th time when he won at last week’s Albury meeting.
Trained and driven by Gary Pekin, the rising 11-year-old gelding by Blissfull Hall was on his 198th start and had been winless in his last 13 starts.
His previous win was at Shepparton in March this year.
Cresco Threepeat’s win started a big night for Pekin, who later completed a training double with Harnett.
A seven-year-old mare by Pet Rock, Harnett’s last win was on the same track 40 starts previously in December 2023.
Pekin utilised her barrier one draw and fired her to the front where she defied all efforts to be run down over the 1770m trip to record her fourth win in 86 starts.
Punters following the Pekin stable should have had a fill-up, with Cresco Threepeat paying $8 for the win and Harnett $12.
