5:05pm: That will conclude our coverage of the GVL interleague matches, thank you for reading along.
To recap, the VAFA under-19s defeated the GVL 14.14 (98) to 8.10 (58), while the seniors GVL fell to the VAFA’s Prem B to Div 3 side 20.9 (129) to 5.8 (38).
5:00pm: Kyabram’s Jack Russell has been awarded best-on-ground for the Goulburn Valley League after a strong day in the midfield.
Coach Nick Pearson thanked the players in the post-match ceremony for their commitment and willingness to adapt when the going got tough.
FULL TIME: VAFA 20.9 (129) defeat GVL 5.8 (38)
The VAFA control the final term and blitz the scoreboard to end a dogged day for the GVL.
The GVL had the capacity to match the VAFA in the first and third quarters, but a strong breeze only furthered the Big V’s class in terms two and four, resulting in a crunching final scoreline.
Watts was the offensive beacon for a day with the little attack available for the Goulburn Valley, while Warnock was commendable down back as the VAFA peppered the defensive arc.
Harry Mahoney, Kevin Maroney and Mansfield’s Sam Thomson also were prominent with the football and effective despite the VAFA’s relentless pressure.
4:45pm: Another goal in reply for the VAFA - its tenth of the term.
4:43pm: A late consolation goal from the GVL, Euroa’s Cohen Paul kicking truly after a contested mark. However, the damage on the other end has only grown, the lead now 85 points.
4:31pm: A strong contested mark back with the flight by Shepparton Swans’ Ethan Warburton. Been solid in a backline without reward today. His kick inside 50 sees Harry Mahoney shoot for goal on a tight angle in free play, which goes through for a minor score.
4:27pm: Shepparton’s Lewis McShane ends a five-goal unanswered run this term for the VAFA. Scores are 15.6 (96) to 4.6 (30) in favour of the Big V.
4:19pm: Five minutes into the term, three goals for the Big V. They’re coming home for the interleague trophy with a wet sail and a handy breeze.
4:14pm: The final term is underway, and the VAFA has snapped an early one through McKenzie - his third of the afternoon.
THREE-QUARTER-TIME: VAFA 10.6 (66), GVL 3.6 (24)
4:04pm: The GVL has halved the contest this term and will enter the final quarter down no greater than it was at the half. The VAFA will undoubtedly look to finish strongly with the breeze however, so the GVL will have to grind out until the final siren to secure a respectable result.
Clearance work and tackles have a strong point for the visitors, but the VAFA’s run and carry and execution off turnover has killed the GVL’s hopes of stealing victory.
3:57pm: After a patch of quiet play, it’s Shepparton’s Jake Watts who kicks truly for the GVL. Watts has been lively through the middle and front half, his goal reward for hard work on a tough day at the office.
3:43pm: Seymour’s Dylan Cook snags a beautiful drop punt set shot from a tight angle, giving the GVL its second of the match.
3:35pm: The GVL players are out of the sheds and the second half is about to begin.
HALF TIME: VAFA 8.3 (51), GVL 1.2 (8)
3:15pm: The shackles have been broken. A six-goal burst from the VAFA has shown the GVL failed to capitalise on the scoring end in the first term, and the Big V now lead by 44 points.
2:57pm: After ten minutes of action, we finally have a score, another goal to the VAFA’s Liam Thomas. The Big V lead by two goals.
2:50pm: Light rain has set in across the ground, with plenty of repeat stoppages and contested ball to begin the quarter.
2:47pm: The ball is up and the second term has started.
QUARTER-TIME: VAFA 2.0 (12), GVL 1.0 (6)
2:38pm: Scoring hard to come by for either side, Shepparton’s Jake Watts has shown flashes of brilliance, while Benalla’s Kevin Maroney and Shepp Swans’ Oliver Warburton have also had good moments.
2:25pm: The VAFA takes the lead with a set shot from Liam Thomas, 2.0 (12) to 1.0 (6).
2:21pm: VAFA’s Rohan McKenzie capitalises to tie the game up.
2:19pm: Harry Mahoney punishes a cross-goal kick in the VAFA’s back half, snaps and goals for the GVL’s first - and the game’s first. GVL lead one straight to no score.
2:13pm: We are underway for the senior match between the Goulburn Valley League and Victorian Amateur Football Association’s Premier B to Division 3 men’s side.
A twist on the GVL’s usual rules in this match - there is no ‘stand’ rule after a mark, and the AFL’s new ‘lasso’ rule is in play for out of bounds between the arcs.
2:09pm: The GVL has won the toss and is kicking with the breeze towards the southern end of ground.
2:05pm: The Goulburn Valley League seniors are on the park, lining up arm-in-arm for the pre-game ceremony.
1:50pm: Shepparton’s Liam Broom is named best-on-ground for the GVL after a superb game in the ruck.
FULL TIME: VAFA 14.14 (98) defeat GVL 8.10 (58)
Leading GVL goal kickers: Myers (3), Jones (2), Cowley, Muir Teague (1)
1:34pm: The GVL go from coast to coast after a VAFA behind, sending it long up the middle and tapping it on into the forward 50. Shepparton’s Liam Teague boots the Sherrin through the middle for the GVL’s eighth.
1:28pm: Riley Myers soccers it off the deck for his third of the contest.
1:21pm: The VAFA is running away with it, scores 14.12 (96) to 6.9 (45).
1:17pm: Darby Jones kicks a banana from the pocket for the GVL’s first of the quarter! He has worked tirelessly all day, clunking yet another mark to earn his shot at goal, and slotted it in with a sliding outside of the boot kick.
1:09pm: The final term of the under-19s has begun, the VAFA kicking an early one.
THREE-QUARTER-TIME: VAFA 11.10 (76), GVL 5.5 (35)
12:51pm: Shepparton connection gets the job done! Liam Broom launches an inside 50 deep to the goal line, a bit of a scrap sees the ball spill out to Noah Muir, who snaps quickly from 25 metres directly in front for the GVL’s first of the quarter.
12:45pm: The southern end of the ground is evidently the scoring end, as the VAFA move to a 33-point advantage. If the GVL can remain in touching distance though, a last quarter with the breeze could see the purple and gold storm home.
12:37pm: An absolute roost from outside 50 by the Big V’s Sam Niklaus has put the first goal on the board for the second half.
12:33pm: The third term is underway here in Brighton.
HALF-TIME: VAFA 6.6 (42), GVL 4.5 (29)
GVL leading goal kickers: Myers (2), Cowley, Jones (1)
12:15pm: The blistering end-to-end style of play the VAFA began with has dried up this term, better suiting the GVL. Myers kicks his second after four straight behinds for the GVL, which now trail by 13 points.
12:03pm: A poor kick out, plus a slip near the Sherrin, has allowed for Shepparton’s Riley Myers to pounce on the football and snag the GVL’s third.
QUARTER-TIME: VAFA 5.2 (32), GVL 2.0 (12).
11:50am: Echuca’s Darby Jones earns a holding the ball free kick inside 50 and kicks truly from his set shot - scores 5.2 (32) to 2.0 (12), advantage VAFA, at quarter-time.
11:45am: The VAFA is running away with it early, kicking its fourth goal for the term - they lead with 4.2 (26), but the GVL shortly makes its first strike! Echuca’s Baxter Cowley goals for the GVL’s opening score.
11:35am: The VAFA have opened up their scoring account with a pair of behinds and a goal to Joshua Kol.
11:30am: The ball has been bounced and the GVL win the first clearance.
11:25am: Both sides have lined up for a minute’s silence for Nathan Fitzgerald, a suburban footballer who had a fatal head knock on the field last week, and then stand for the national anthem.
11:15am: The GVL under-19s are onto the Revo Fitness Park deck, and have taken their team photo, AFL grand final style.
11:00am: Picturesque morning conditions on Saturday morning at Revo Fitness Park, as a well-groomed surface painted with coloured 45 metre arcs and sponsors on the wing is set for interleague action.
