The Bombers have a potential emerging star in Max Stockdale.
Co-captain of the recent premiership-winning Kyabram under-16 side, Stockdale has also pulled off the league medal In the Goulburn Murray division one under-16 competition and his best and fairest award.
He was named in the best players in 11 of the 12 games Kyabram played.
According to his coach, Kyabram legend Paul Newman, Stockdale is a future star.
‘‘He is both hard at it and skilful and never gives up. I believe he will play senior football within the next couple of years,’’ Newman said.
Coach goes it alone
Merrigum Football Club will have only one senior coach next season.
Dean Wileman, who shared the role with Jason Verhoeven this season, is stepping down, leaving Verhoeven as sole coach. His assistant will be star player James Ross.
The reserves will be coached jointly by Dan Beattie and Damien Scarcella.
Merrigum had a winless season but is financially and socially sound and is looking to make further improvement next season.
Archer aims high
Tatura’s Michael Archer’s rise to prominence as a leg-spin bowler has reached new heights.
Archer has been selected in the Melbourne Renegades squad for the Big Bash series over the festive period.
Archer played Premier League cricket with Greenvale Kangaroos before switching to Carlton two seasons ago when he emerged as a serious bowler.
He played with the Hurley’s Hotel-sponsored team in the northern Victoria Bush Bash series, which was wound up last year.
Archer’s rise to prominence has come with a lot of hard work and travelling, and he deserves every success that comes his way.
Honours for Reid
Harley Reid’s star continues to rise, with the brilliant Tongala export claiming the West Coast Eagles’ top individual award, the John Worsfold Medal, in his third season with the club.
He also was awarded the Geoff Christian Medal for the ABC's best WA-based player this season.
Eagles fans unfortunately will have to wait until round three in the 2027 season to see the tough midfielder in action after West Coast unsuccessfully challenged his two-game suspension for a dangerous tackle on Hawthorn’s Jai Newcombe in the final AFL home-and-away round.
Daniels is back for more
There’s movement in the coaching and recruiting scene in the Murray League.
Numurkah has appointed Jamason Daniels as its new coach, a role he has previously held. He also coached Tatura in he GVL.
He will have coaching support from Zac McKeown, Ben Smyth and Brad Dobson, who replace co-coaches Chris O’Dwyer, Jordan O’Dwyer and Tim Arnel.
Rumbalara is looking to rebuild and has lured former Dandenong Stingrays star Josiah Kyle back to the club along with Jayden Thorpe, who played five games with Rumba in the 2016 season.
Grinter is special guest
Tocumwal celebrated Father’s Day on Sunday with a footy theme.
Guest speaker at the celebrations was Rod Grinter, the former Melbourne Football Club hard man who played 134 games with the Demons after being recruited from Katandra.
