In fact, he said some of the fine people in the photo might consider themselves “heritage” by now!
The photo depicts debutantes and partners presented to the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe, at the centenary ball of the Shire of Waranga, 1965, in the Shire Hall at Rushworth.
Look to the ants
A Traps reader has claimed all those tell-tale signs that rain is on the way listed by our Moulamein Mate China Gibson in these columns recently has missed one obvious pointer.
‘‘Ants on the move and building nests is the most accurate sign rain is on the way,’’ claimed the reader.
A few weeks ago in this column, when the lack of rain was getting a bit serious, China tipped that he had seen a murder of crows, which could mean rain was on the way. He was spot on with that prediction.
Most areas received welcome rainfall on May 17 and 18, with 27.2mm recorded at the Ky weather station. More rain than that was registered in some areas across the Goulburn Valley, which was a godsend for those farmers who had just planted crops.
But up to Monday no follow-up falls had been recorded, but rain was predicted for Tuesday of this week.
The circus is on its way
Yes, the circus is coming to town.
Billboards have popped up everywhere announcing Silvers Circus will be in Kyabram, but dates have not yet been announced.
So, when did the last circus appear in Kyabram?
That one may stump even Eileen!
Fireworks warning
Deniliquin police have issued a warning to those people letting off fireworks around the town over the past few months.
The message from police is fireworks are illegal in NSW without a licence from SafeWork NSW.
Only Tasmania and the Northern Territory allow some exceptions — and even then, there are strict rules about who buys them and when and how they’re used.
Heavyweight pumpkin
A 168kg pumpkin has been grown by Seymour hobby gardener Ben White.
But it’s a little lighter than the 400kg pumpkin grown by Mark Peacock, who gave Ben the seeds to start growing large pumpkins in 2023.
Ben’s first effort was 80kg and a whole lot smaller than Ben’s 400kg whopper the same year.
But Ben and Mark are well short of the world record for the weight of a pumpkin.
The current world record for a pumpkin is a staggering 1,278.8kg and was grown by Ian and Stuart Paton from Lymington, England.
Just to make it clear how big that is, it weighs roughly as much as a small compact car, like a Toyota Corolla, or an adult saltwater crocodile.
A bit hard to get on the Christmas dinner plate whole, you would think.
Hall reaches milestone
Rochester’s Salvation Hall is preparing to celebrate a century.
It was officially opened on June 19, 1926.
A branch had been established in July 1888 but in a flood-prone area, which led to the building of a new home.
Square dinkum
G’day.
We found a leaflet in our letterbox this morning that read: ‘‘DO YOU HAVE A DRINKING PROBLEM? CALL NOW. WE CAN HELP.’’
My wife insisted I make that call.
‘‘So, I called ... it was the bottle shop offering a special – Buy 3 and get 1 free. I’m glad I called.’’
Hooroo!
